Polar bears
made wonderful rugs to use in a bachelor's bedroom.
To
kill walrus for their ivory tusks, Bradley had a motor boat.
(That was rare in 1907) The boat was all white with a white canvas top cover
to camouflage it so it looked sort of like an iceberg. In this effective
stealth mode John, Fred, and their Eskimo teams roared towards herds sunning themselves on
ice flows. Then they blasted away with rifles - sometimes slaughtering
the entire walrus herd! The
Eskimos enjoyed this since they got the blubber and meat, while Bradley
took the Ivory.
Reading
Cook's otherwise absurd 1911 book one can sense his lust for the kill.
What a life. Shoot beasts, fry their meats for lunch and have a glass
of wine while the "little people" butchered the catch and gave
them the ivory tusks. This is typical of Dr. Cook. When he was flush
with cash from the North Pole hoax, or later with his oil stock scams, he
stayed in the best hotel suites, ordered expensive custom tailored cloths
and ate in expensive restaurants.
