Sherando Lake Recreation Area along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia is an area filled with recreational opportunities and provides a great campground to spend the night. Sherando Lake Recreation Area is located in the section of the George Washington national Forest that runs almost along Interstate 81 to the east of Lexington, VA.
Though located in the George Washington National Forest which provides a lot of area to relax, Sherando Lake Recreation Area is actually easy to reach. Sherando Lake Recreation Area is easy to access via Interstate 64, Interstate 81, as well as US Routes 29 and 60 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The campground at Sherando Lake Recreation Area offers over 60 camping sites for those who prefer to camp in tents as well as RV campers. The campground is divided into three areas. Area A offers probably the most scenic camping. Area A sites are surrounded by vegetation and are under a canopy of trees.
Areas B and C are more open. Area B has hookups for RV’s. In general camping sites are large, clean, and provide views of the surrounding scenery. The Sherando Lake Recreation Area campground sites provide a picnic table and fire grill. Flush toilets, showers, water spigots and vending machines are available as well.
The Sherando Lake Recreation Area takes its name from Sherando Lake which is actually two lakes. The two lakes provide opportunities for fishing, swimming, sunbathing, bird watching and other recreational pursuits. One lake provides a sandy swimming beach and a well marked swimming area, while the other is reserved for fishing.
Trails around and near the lakes are great for access to remote fishing spots as well as leisurely hiking. Other trails in the area provide more challenge for those looking to get away from it all and enjoy nature. There are numerous things to do within a reasonable drive of the Sherando Lake Recreation Area in Virginia’s George Washington National Forest. Of course, cruising along the Blue Ridge Parkway and enjoying the scenery is a popular activity. Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace outside of Staunton, Virginia, is located nearby.
This entire area of Virginia is home to numerous sites of Civil War interest with Appomattox Court House National Historic Park to the southeast being the closest major site.
