Mountain View, California. July 11, 1997

Widget Magic released photographic evidence today that Carl Sagan is alive on Mars at the landing site recently named in his honor. A stunned press corps was told that biotechnology researchers had collected tissue samples of the famous scientist prior to his death last year. Using the same techniques for mammalian cloning demonstrated earlier this year with a sheep, the team succeeded in creating viable embryo's which were placed aboard the Mars Pathfinder. Sagan's last wish had been to have his clone sent to Mars in the hope that he might fulfill his lifelong dream of traveling to the red planet.

Solar flares may have accelerated cell division a billion fold....

Puzzled biologists have been at a loss to explain the rapid cell growth of the Sagan clone. Dr Peter Krensky, director of the esteemed MediaScience laboratories in Mountain View today discussed his theories about the appearance of the full grown Sagan at the lander. "Numerous high energy magnetic fields have been noted as a consequence of unusual solar activity during the flight to Mars" he stated. "We believe that cosmic radiation and solar flares could have sped up the cellular division of the clone. It is obvious that there are now billions and billions of his cells!" Dr. Krensky shouted at the briefing.

Concerns now focus on how many Sagan embryos were hidden on board the NASA probe. It is feared that if Dr. Krensky's theories are true that the Sagan clones could continue to divide at accelerated rates. "Mars has no magnetic field to stop solar radiation, no ozone layer to attenuate the ultraviolet rays from the Sun." Krensky continued.

"So far we have three Sagan's near the Lander - if this continues there could be dozens of Sagans in a week, millions in a few months and within only a year the entire Martian surface could be covered with "billions and billions" of Carl Sagan clones."
