Zircon - What the hell is zircon? I'm glad you asked! Zircon is a mineral, from which the pure element zirconium is extracted. Zircon - (Zr[SiO4]) contains ZrO2~67.1% and SiO2~32.9%, sometimes it contains MnO, CaO, MgO, Fe2O3, Al2O3, Tr2O3 and a little oxide of Th, Hf and V such as ThO2, V3O8, HfO2,etc. It has many varieties.Usually Zircon is insoluble in hydrochloric acid , nitric acid and sulphuric acid, it can dissolve in H3PO4 (Phosphoric acid) completely. Zircon can be colorless or white, orange, light yellow, yellowish brown, purplish red, reddish brown ,light red, blue and green, It has glass luster to adamantine luster. It is transparent to translucent. Hardness:7.5~8.0. It is brittle. Specific gravity:4.4~4.8. It is high- temperture-resisting and sometimes has radioactivity . Zircon occurs in acidic or alkaline magmatic rocks, it also occurs in carbonatite which has relation of origin with alkaline ultrabasic rock. It often concentrates and become placer too.Zircon distributes over Hainan, Fujian, Shandong, Jiangsu, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, etc. Zircon is the mainly mineral raw material for extracting zirconium. Zirconium and its compounds are widely used in industry.The transparent and beatuiful zircon can serve as gem.
